When Do Asia Miles Expire? Validity and Ways to Keep Miles Active

Understand the 18-month Asia Miles expiry system, qualifying transactions and posting times, and manage your balance even without immediate travel plans.

How long can you keep your Asia Miles? If you have no travel plans, do you need to rush to redeem a flight? The key is whether your miles account has a qualifying transaction and when it is actually credited or debited.

This guide explains expiry calculations, common ways to keep miles active and the posting times that are easy to overlook.

1. When do Asia Miles expire?

Miles earned from 1 January 2020 follow an activity-based system. Earning or redeeming miles at least once every 18 months keeps them active. The expiry date is extended by 18 months from the latest qualifying credit or debit of miles.

This applies to the miles balance under the activity-based system, rather than only to the miles you have just earned. Cathay also sets no minimum number of miles you must earn or redeem. Cathay's expiry and minimum transaction guidance

Example: how does a new transaction change the date?

Suppose your latest qualifying miles credit is on 10 October 2026. Adding 18 months gives an expiry date of 10 April 2028.

If another qualifying miles credit posts on 1 March 2027, the expiry date extends to 1 September 2028. These dates illustrate the calculation; check the actual date displayed in your account.

2. Can you keep miles active without travelling?

Yes. Common qualifying activities include:

  • Earning miles through eligible flights or partner transactions.
  • Converting eligible credit card or rewards programme points into Asia Miles.
  • Redeeming miles for awards.

You do not need to arrange a trip solely to keep miles active. First check whether spending you already make, or points you already hold, offers an eligible way to earn or transfer miles.

RentSmart | Make monthly rent an opportunity to earn miles

Eligible rent transactions through RentSmart may earn miles with a card that earns Asia Miles or rewards convertible to Asia Miles. Card points are not posted Asia Miles, and paying rent does not extend validity immediately; a qualifying miles credit must actually reach your Asia Miles account.

3. Do sign-ins or refunds extend validity?

Signing in, checking your balance or searching for flights does not create a qualifying miles transaction. Reversal transactions arising from refunds or cancellations do not qualify either.

For example, if miles are returned after cancelling an award ticket, do not assume that an increased balance necessarily means the expiry date has been extended. Qualifying transactions in Cathay's membership terms

4. Does credit card spending extend validity immediately?

Remember the difference between the spending date and the miles posting date. Banks and partners have different processing times. Making a purchase or submitting a points transfer request does not mean the miles are already in your Asia Miles account.

If your card first earns bank points, an eligible transfer and crediting of miles must also be completed. An increase in bank points does not itself mean your Asia Miles account has had a transaction.

Act early and check whether the expiry date has updated after the miles post, rather than discovering in the final few days that a transaction is still being processed.

5. How do you check expiry and confirm an extension?

Sign in to your Cathay membership account and check your miles details and transaction history. Account summaries also show your miles expiry date. Use this checklist:

  • Record the current expiry date and set a reminder two to three months ahead.
  • Choose an eligible earning or redemption activity that serves an existing need.
  • Allow the processing time stated by your bank or partner.
  • Afterwards, confirm that miles have been credited or debited and check the expiry date.

If miles have not posted within the expected time, keep your purchase or transfer records and contact the relevant bank or partner. Even without immediate travel plans, managing expiry helps you keep miles for a suitable trip later.

Make monthly rent an opportunity to keep earning miles

Alongside everyday shopping, monthly rent can be a source of miles. With RentSmart credit card rent payments and a card whose rewards earn or can be converted into Asia Miles, eligible rent spending may earn miles.

A credit card payment date is not the miles posting date. Only when miles are actually credited to your Asia Miles account and meet the qualifying requirements can they help extend validity. After paying rent, check the posting record and expiry date as part of preparing for your next trip.
